Shipping restrictions and French custom clearance

If you're sending to France from within the European Union (and remember, the UK is no longer in the EU), your shipment will not be subject to customs clearance and will not incur any additional charges, even if you're shipping commercial goods. As goods in the EU are in free circulation, they will not need a customs invoice to be submitted.

However, if you're sending from countries outside the EU, such as the UK, then you will need to provide a customs invoice (which Parcelhero will produce for you) and your goods may be subject to clearance delays and French customs authorities may apply import duties and taxes to your goods upon import, which are charges levied by the local government not the courier.

The VAT rate for importing goods into France is 20%, however, certain products incur lower charges.

We always recommend checking with French customs prior to shipping.

France has its own import rules and regulations and it is good practice to check any restrictions directly with the French customs authorities, before you send your parcel.

New EU Customs charges
Sending parcels to the EU has got more expensive and more data-heavy this year. Here is what you need to know.

1 July 2026: the EU introduced a flat €3 customs duty on most business-to-consumer (B2C) parcels worth €150 or less. The old duty-free treatment for low-value parcels has ended.

Early 2027: three more changes arrive.

  1. A new €2 EU handling fee per item, on top of the €3 duty.

  2. Mandatory Product Identifiers (PIDs) for every item in a B2C parcel, whatever its value.

  3. The new €2 handling fee applies to parcels over €150 too, although the €3 duty introduced in July does not.

Gifts: genuine personal gifts worth €45 or under, sent from one person to another, are still exempt from the €3 duty.

What's next? The EU is calling the current rules temporary. A full customs reform, including the removal of the €150 threshold, is expected around mid 2028.

French public holidays

Transit times to France are usually 1-3 days, but can vary according to the service you select. Some major public holidays (like Bastille Day) may impact transit times. If you are shipping to France during public holidays, please check delivery timetables before booking.

If you're sending gifts to France at Christmas, do keep in mind that the French tend to open their presents on the 24th December.

Packaging your parcel

Shipping a parcel to Marseille, Lyon or any other area of France is not a simple as sending a package within the UK. When sending an international parcel delivery, your parcel will be handled more times and will be exposed to different conditions on route. It's therefore really important that you package your parcel safely for international transportation. As a minimum, we recommend using a double lined box, wrapping each item individually and always filling the box with packaging material so the goods inside cannot move around.
